Biography: Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, was a British financier, philanthropist, and significant art patron. He managed an investment trust, preserved cultural heritage, and supported numerous philanthropic endeavors. His role in business, arts, and charity reflected the influence of the Rothschild banking family.

Jacob Rothschild was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. His academic achievements included a First in history at Oxford, where he was also a member of the Bullingdon Club. His parents were Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, and Barbara Judith Rothschild, who converted to Orthodox Judaism.

In his business career, Rothschild initially worked at N M Rothschild & Sons but later established RIT Capital Partners plc after selling his stake in the family bank. He co-founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group with Sir Mark Weinberg.

Rothschild and his partners Sir James Goldsmith and Kerry Packer made a notable but unsuccessful bid for British American Tobacco. Rothschild also purchased 5% of Genie Energy and acquired Mikhail Khodorkovsky's shares in YUKOS, demonstrating further interests in the oil industry.

Notably involved in the arts, Rothschild chaired the National Gallery, facilitated the restoration of historic London properties, and backed the Butrint archaeological site's conservation in Albania. His leadership extended to supporting Jewish and Israeli causes.

As the major benefactor of Waddesdon Manor, Rothschild sponsored the estate's restoration. Waddesdon Manor has hosted U.S. presidents and significant events due to Rothschild's efforts.

Rothschild's contributions were acknowledged with the Order of Merit (OM), Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), and the J. Paul Getty Medal.

Jacob Rothschild passed away on 26 February 2024. He was married Serena Mary Dunn, who passed away in 2009, and had four children. His son, Nathaniel Rothschild, inherited his titles and continues the family legacy.
