Biography: Carl XVI Gustaf is the King of Sweden and the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history. He became king in 1973 and has since worked to modernize the monarchy.

Carl Gustaf's early life was marked by tragedy when lost his father in a plane crash as an infant. As a young man, Carl Gustaf prepared for his future role through military service and university studies in history, politics, and economics.

At age 27, Carl Gustaf ascended to the throne. He adopted the motto För Sverige – i tiden ("For Sweden – With the times"), signaling his intent to update the monarchy. In 1974, a new law reduced the king's powers, making his role mostly ceremonial.

Carl Gustaf married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976. They have three children and eight grandchildren. The succession laws have also been changed to absolute primogeniture, making his eldest child, Victoria, the heir apparent instead of his son.

Throughout his reign, Carl Gustaf has shown interest in environmental issues and technology. He is also deeply involved in Scouting, serving as honorary chairman of the World Scout Foundation.

In 2019, Carl Gustaf removed the royal status of five of his grandchildren to streamline the monarchy. This decision was part of his ongoing efforts to modernize the royal family. Despite some controversies, public support for the monarchy remains strong in Sweden.
