Under the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750, Britain skipped 11 days to adopt the Gregorian calendar. This realigned the calendar with the solar year and compensated for the drift that had occurred due to the Julian calendar having too many leap days. It also brought Britain in line with much of Western Europe, which moved to the Gregorian calendar on October 15, 1582.
