Born in what is today South Sudan, Akech spent her early years in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya before her family found asylum in Adelaide, Australia. In her new home, she adopted the name "Mary," but she later reclaimed her birth name, Adut, within the professional sphere.

Upon being scouted at 16, Akech began her career by signing with Chadwick Models in Sydney. Her rise in the fashion world gained momentum after her Saint Laurent debut and her subsequent representation by Elite Model Management in Paris.

Akech has worked with leading fashion houses and featured in numerous high-profile campaigns, runway shows, and magazine editorials. Notably, she appeared in the 2018 Pirelli Calendar and has also contributed to humanitarian efforts through her work with the United Nations Refugee Agency.
