Biography: Al Sharpton is an American civil rights activist, Baptist minister, and media personality. He is a founder of the National Action Network and campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004. He also hosts a radio show, Keepin' It Real, and a television program on MSNBC, PoliticsNation.

Born in New York, to Ada and Alfred Sharpton Sr., Sharpton's engagement with civil rights activism began at a young age. At the age of four, he preached his first sermon. In his early career, he served as a tour manager for the soul musician James Brown.

Sharpton founded the National Youth Movement in 1971 and worked alongside established civil rights leaders like Jesse Jackson, participating in demonstrations and leading actions against racial injustice.

Sharpton's rise to prominence came with his involvement in high-profile incidents in New York City, including cases involving Bernhard Goetz, Howard Beach, and Bensonhurst during the 1980s. In 1991, aiming to foster social justice and civil rights advancement, Sharpton established the National Action Network.

During the early 1990s, Sharpton's name became linked with events such as the Crown Heights riot and the controversy at Freddy's Fashion Mart. He faced criticism for his roles in these incidents and later expressed remorse for any contribution he may have made to inflaming the situations.
