Biography: Alan Michael Sugar is a British business magnate, media personality, and political figure known for his rags-to-riches story. He gained recognition after founding the electronics company Amstrad and later, for his role as host of the BBC series The Apprentice. By 2021, Sugar's net worth was estimated at £1.21 billion, making him one of the UK's wealthiest individuals.

Sugar was born in 1947 in East London into a Jewish family. Having been raised in a council flat, he left school at age 16 and worked as a statistician before founding Amstrad at just 21 years old.

The company started off selling electrical goods and eventually branched out into the manufacturing sector, playing a significant role in the home computer market of the 1980s. Despite facing challenges in the 1990s, Amstrad remained influential until Sugar sold it to BSkyB in 2007.

During his time as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club from 1991 to 2001, Sugar was credited with stabilizing the club's finances but also faced criticism, especially over his contentious relationship with the manager, Terry Venables. He divested his shares in the club the same year he sold Amstrad.

Sugar's role as the host of The Apprentice, which he began in 2005, contributed significantly to the program's success and eventual spin-offs. His television career extended into additional appearances, including a stint on The Celebrity Apprentice Australia in 2021.

His business ventures expanded beyond Amstrad to include Amsair, Amsprop, Viglen Ltd, and Amscreen. Sugar also served as the chairman of YouView TV platform. Although he started as a Labour supporter, Sugar left the party in 2015, expressing disillusionment and later publicly criticizing party leader Jeremy Corbyn. He was also a proponent of the Remain campaign during the Brexit referendum.

Sugar's personal life included his marriage to Ann Simons in 1968 with whom he has three children. His philanthropic efforts have complemented his business success, and he received a knighthood in 2000 for his services to the community.
