Biography: Alec Bedser was an English cricketer renowned for his medium-fast bowling. His cricketing prowess spanned both domestic and international arenas, and he later served as the chairman of selectors for the English national team. In recognition of his services, he was knighted in 1997.

Alec Bedser and his twin brother Eric were born in Reading, Berkshire, and raised in Surrey. From an early age, cricket was a central part of their lives. Both brothers began their first-class careers with Surrey, making their debut against Oxford University in 1939.

The outbreak of World War II, however, meant a hiatus from cricket as Alec enlisted in the RAF, serving in numerous locales including France, North Africa, Italy, and Austria before being demobilised in 1946.

Resuming his cricket career after the war, Bedser quickly became a key player for Surrey and an integral member of the England Test team. His remarkable skill in taking 236 wickets in his 51 Test matches once set a record for the most Test wickets.

The highlight of his international career was helping England clinch the Ashes in 1953, while domestically he contributed to Surrey's dominance of eight County Championships between 1950 and 1958. Bedser is also remembered for his iconic encounters with Don Bradman, who he dismissed six times.

Upon retiring from active play in 1960, Bedser transitioned into the commercial sector but maintained a strong connection to cricket. His extensive involvement included a term as chairman of selectors from 1968 to 1981, managing England's overseas tours, and presiding as the president of the Surrey County Cricket Club.
