Biography: Alfred Tennyson was an English poet that served as Poet Laureate for most of the reign of Queen Victoria. Some of his best known poems include 'Claribel' and 'Mariana.' Some of his phrases have sunk into the English language, including "Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all"

Tennyson's The Charge of the Light Brigade is particularly famous for its depiction of the end of the era of cavalry dominance. The poem's thesis was to be proved beyond doubt in the First World War when modern weaponry caused a horrific end to the preeminence of cavalry.
