Her most famous work is the critically acclaimed novel "The Color Purple", which won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was later turned into an Oscar nominated film directed by Steven Spielberg starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Walker is a prominent black feminist and has coined the term "womanist" to represent her feminism. Her novel "Possessing the Secret of Joy" focused on female genital mutilation which she dvocates against.
