It was later turned into an Oscar nominated film directed by Steven Spielberg starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Walker is a prominent black feminist and has coined the term "womanist" to represent her feminism. Her novel "Possessing the Secret of Joy" focused on female genital mutilation which she dvocates against.
