Biography: Amy Johnson was an English pilot, best known as the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. She set a number of records, many solo but also with her husband Jim Mollison, as well as flying in the Second World War.

She disappeared in 1941 during a flight from Prestwick to Oxford after losing track of her course in difficult weather conditions. Reports say that she bailed from her aircraft, and she was seen alive in the water by a convoy of wartime vessels. While ropes were thrown, Johnson disappeared beneath the ship.
