Biography: Pavelić founded the fascist ultra-nationalist organization Ustaše while in exile in 1929 with help from Benito Mussolini. Pavelić allied himself with Nazi Germany, and when they invaded Croatia in 1941, he was selected to lead the puppet government named the Independent State of Croatia.

During his rule, the government murdered hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Romani and anti-fascist Croats, utilizing concentration and extermination camps such as Jasenovac. After the war he escaped to Austria, then Argentina, where he was shot several times in an assassination attempt. He died of those wounds two years later in Spain.
