Biography: António Guterres began his professional life as an academic before joining the Socialist Party in 1972 and devoting himself to politics.

Guterres became leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party in 1992 and led them to victory in the 1995 national election, after which Guterres was appointed Prime Minister.

Guterres was a popular Prime Minister during his first term, overseeing Expo 98 in Lisbon and the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Vasco da Gama.

Guterres' second term as Prime Minister was not as successful, his government's reputation was damaged by the Hintze Ribeiro Bridge disaster in 2001. Guterres resigned in 2002.

In 2005 he was elected UN High Commissioner for Refugees and served till 2015, dealing with the refugees crisis that resulted from the Syrian civil war. In 2017 he was elected UN Secretary General.
