Full Name: George Robert Newhart
Profession: Comedian and Actor

Nationality:
United States of America
American

Biography: Newhart is noted for his deadpan and slightly stammering delivery, and one-sided phone call routines, where the audience only hears his half of a conversation.. Reaching a global audience in the 1960s, Newhart's comedy album "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" became an international best-seller and was number one in the United States. The album won 3 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

Moving from the nightclubs to the screen, he hosted a short-lived variety program, lasting only one season it garnered an Emmy and a Peabody Award. He continued his career in small television and film acting roles, notably as the antagonist in Norman Lear's black comedy feature "Cold Turkey" (1971).

Beginning in 1972, he starred in the sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" as a Chicago psychologist. The series ran for six years. He followed this with an 8-year run in "Newhart" (1982-90) as a how-to book writer and Vermont innkeeper. The finale of the latter series memorably harkened back to the previous program.

In 2002, Newhart was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2013, he won his first Emmy Award for acting, in the recurring guest role of Professor Proton in "The Big Bang Theory".
