Biography: Brigham Young was an American religious leader, politician, and settler. He was the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1847 until his death in 1877 and is often known as the "American Moses" or the "Modern Moses" because of his role in leading the Latter-day Saints to Utah, similar to the biblical figure's role in leading the Israelites to the Promised Land.

Young was an early convert to the LDS Church, joining shortly after it was established by Joseph Smith in 1830. Following the assassination of Smith in 1844, Young assumed leadership of the church. His charismatic, decisive leadership was critical in holding the church together and ensuring its survival during this period of crisis.

In 1847, Young led a vanguard company of Latter-day Saints on a trek across the American West to the Salt Lake Valley, which was then outside the boundaries of the United States. This location became the new home for the Latter-day Saints, who later founded numerous communities throughout the West. Young's pioneering efforts were critical in the settlement of the American West, and he is often associated with the phrase "This is the place," which he reportedly said upon entering the Salt Lake Valley.

Beyond his religious leadership, Young was a significant political figure. He was appointed the first governor of the Utah Territory by President Millard Fillmore and served in this role from 1850 to 1857. Despite controversy and conflict with the U.S. government, Young remained a powerful figure in Utah, both religiously and politically, until his death.
