Biography: Camille Pissarrro was an influential Impressionist and Post-Impressionist French painter. Born to French Jewish parents on Saint Thomas in the West Indies, Pissarro moved to Caracas then Paris where he studied under such masters as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet.

From the 1860s Pissarro's works were accepted at the Paris Salon. In 1863 he exhibited at the famous Salon des Refusés.

As a result of the Franco-Prussian War Pissarro fled to London where he lived 1870-1 and when he returned found much of his earlier works destroyed.

Back in France Pissarro became a mentor to younger artists such as Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. In 1874 he was also part of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris.
