Biography: Chaim Weizmann was the first president of the newly formed state of Israel in 1949 and served until his death in 1952. Prior to this, Weizmann was, for many decades, the leader of the worldwide Zionist movement.

Born in the western Russian Empire (now Belarus) Weizmann trained as a scientist and settled in the United Kingdom as a chemist and prominent young Zionist leader. He travelled the world promoting Zionist ideals and advocating for a Jewish state in Palestine, often coming into conflict with more strident Zionists who accused him of pro-British bias.

His 1948 talks with US President Harry S. Truman were crucial to gaining support for the establishment of the State of Israel. He received a state funeral after his death in 1952.
