Biography: Charles E. Merrill is was an American businessman and philanthropist who founded Merrill Lynch & Co., one of the world's largest stockbrokerage firms. He was born in 1885 in Maine to a family of merchants, and he attended business school at Amherst College.

After graduating, he moved to New York City and began his career in the stock market. Merrill quickly established himself as a successful business leader, and in 1915, he co-founded Merrill Lynch & Co. with his partner, Edmund C. Lynch. The firm soon became one of the largest and most successful stockbrokerage firms in the world.

Merrill was also a noted philanthropist, and he donated large sums of money to a variety of charities, including the United Negro College Fund and the American Red Cross.
