Biography: Dave Winfield was a star outfielder in Major League Baseball during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

After a College Hall of Fame career with the University of Minnesota, Winfield was selected 4th overall by the San Diego Padres in the 1973 MLB Draft.

He was traded to the NY Yankees in 1980 for the biggest contract in baseball history at that time (10-years, $23 million) and had a rocky relationship with the Yankees controversial owner George Steinbrenner, even though he had 8 of his 12 All Star seasons with the Bronx Bombers.

An outstanding fielder and hitter, Winfield also won 7 Gold Glove and 6 Silver Slugger Awards in his 22 year MLB career.

Perhaps his personal crowning glory came in 1992 when at the age of 40 he was an integral part of the Toronto Blue Jays World Series champion team.

In his first year of eligibility, Winfield was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 and he remains in baseball as a special assistant to the Executive Director of the MLB Players Association.
