DMX, who took his stage name from the Oberheim DMX drum machine was known for his menacing yet soulful sound that came to the fore in his live performances. His music reflected his own troubled life and public struggles against addiction and his hard upbringing.
His breakout single was the 1998 single "Get at Me Dog". Other hit singles included "Party Up (Up In Here)" and "X Gon' Give It To Ya".
DMX was also a successful actor appearing in "Romeo Must Die" opposite Jet Li and Aaliyah and "Exit Wounds" with Steven Seagal.
