Edward V

King of England Edward V

Profession: King of England

Nationality:
England
English

Biography: The oldest of the infamous 'Princes in the Tower' Edward V of England inherited the crown from his father Edward IV aged 12 in 1483 but was never crowned. Instead his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester, appointed as his protector seized the throne instead. Edward and his younger brother Richard were imprisoned in the Tower of London.

An act of parliament, Titulus Regius was then passed, handing the throne to Richard who ruled as Richard III until 1485. The fate of Edward V remains a mystery to this day and it is commonly assumed he and his brother were murdered by their uncle. Shakespeare certainly thought so and his tragedy "Richard III" depicts the brothers' murder at Richard's hands. In 1674 children's bones were found in the Tower and assumed to be the two princes. These bones are now interred in an urn in Westminster Abbey but their true provenance is unknown.

Born: November 2, 1470
