Biography: Eugene Bullard was an African American pilot who flew for the French during World War I. He was one of the first black military pilots in the world.

He was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1895, and grew up in a very segregated society. In 1913, Eugene left for France to get away from the racism he experienced in the United States. He settled in Paris and found work as a musician and a boxer.

He moved to Paris in 1912, where he worked as a musician and boxer. When World War I began, he joined the French Foreign Legion and eventually became a pilot. He flew in many combat missions and was even shot down once.

After the war, he returned to the United States, but he was not welcomed back with open arms. He eventually settled in Paris again, where he died in 1961.
