Biography: Morales was President of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, in which he was the first indigenous Bolivian to hold this office. His administration was characterized by their left-wing politics, which sought to push back against American and corporate influence in Bolivia.

Coming from a family of subsistence farmers, Morales became involved in trade unions and campaigned against imperialist policies. His early political career involved direct action protests against the government and resulted in several arrests.

Afterwards, Morales entered the Bolivian Congress in 1997; then he was expelled in 2002, during which year he also came second in the presidential election. Then in 2005, Morales was elected as President of Bolivia; a position he held until civil unrest resulted in his temporary exile and the election of Luis Arce.
