Biography: Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher who founded the Franciscan Order. Born into a wealthy family in Assisi in the late 12th century, Francis initially led a carefree life. His experiences as a soldier and subsequent illness, however, led to his conversion. He abandon his wealthy background, adopting a life of poverty and service.

Francis became renowned for his deep faith and his attention to the poor and sick. He is especially known for his unique relationship with animals and nature, which has led to his being considered the patron saint of animals and the environment. His philosophy emphasized brotherly love and the importance of living a simple, humble life.

He established the Franciscan tradition by founding the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of St. Clare, as well as the Third Order of Saint Francis for married men and women. The latter did not follow the first and second orders in their lives of monasticism and itinerant preaching, but were still included within the Franciscan Order.

Francis was canonized as a saint by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, just two years after his death. The Franciscan Order continues to this day, and Francis himself remains one of the most venerated religious figures in history and as an ideal in his imitation of Christ.
