Biography: Frank Herbert was an American author best known for his creation of the Dune series. His work deeply explored ecology, politics, human psychology, and is celebrated for its intricate plot, complex characters, and its impact on the science fiction genre.

Herbert's early interest in literature and photography began in Tacoma, Washington. During the Great Depression, he moved to Salem, Oregon, and after graduating from high school, he started a career in journalism. Herbert served in the Navy's Seabees during World War II and later married Beverly Ann Stuart in 1946, whose support was essential for his writing.

Starting as a newspaper journalist, photographer, and book reviewer, Herbert moved to writing science fiction in the early 1950s with his first novel, The Dragon in the Sea (1955). Inspired by the Oregon Dunes, he began researching Dune in 1959, which, after initial rejections, was published in 1965 and went on to win the Nebula Award and share the Hugo Award.

Herbert's success with Dune led to the publication of multiple sequels and allowed him to become a full-time writer by 1972. His works commonly addressed themes like ecology, leadership, and the potential of the human spirit. Alongside his fiction, Herbert was known for his criticism of government structures, including his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Herbert faced personal tragedy when Beverly passed away in 1984. He himself died in 1986 from a pulmonary embolism. "Posthumously, Herbert's works have been expanded upon by his son Brian Herbert and co-author Kevin J. Anderson, ensuring his legacy within the genre.
