Biography: The Australian tennis player over the course of his career won five Grand Slam singles titles as an amateur and 22 Grand Slam doubles titles. He was ranked the worlds No. 1 amateur player 1950-53.

In the Davis Cup Sedgman led his country to three straight championships over the United States in 1950, 1951 and 1952. He controversially turned professional in 1953 and was the world's No. 2 ranked professional player 1958-60. ,

In 1979, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia, one of the country's highest honours.
