Biography: Gaylord Perry was an outstanding right-handed pitcher who played for eight different teams in Major League Baseball from 1962 to 1983.

He gained unwanted notoriety for doctoring baseballs with saliva or petroleum jelly to gain an advantage. These were known as "spitballs". However he was only ejected from a game once in his long career for this illegal practice and that was in his 21st MLB season. He was suspended for 10 days for the offence.

Perry played nine seasons with the San Francisco Giants but moved to the Cleveland Indians in 1972 and immediately had success in winning the AL Cy Young Award. In 1978 he became the first pitcher to win the prestigious award from both Leagues with the NL San Diego Padres.

He was a 5-time MLB All-Star in 1966, 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1979 and also led the Major Leagues in Wins in 1970, 1972 and 1978. He also recorded a no-hitter in 1968.

Perry compiled 314 wins, 3,534 strikeouts and a 3.11 earned run average and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
