Biography: Gerry Adams is an Irish republican politician who played a key role in the modern history of Northern Ireland. He is best known for his leadership of Sinn Féin, a political party associated with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and its campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland and reunify Ireland.

Born in Belfast, into a strongly republican family, Adams became involved in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He was interned without trial by the British government in the early 1970s due to his alleged involvement with the IRA, although he has consistently denied being a member of the organization.

Adams became a leading figure in Sinn Féin in the 1970s and 1980s, a period marked by intense sectarian conflict known as "The Troubles." Under his leadership, Sinn Féin sought to blend its traditional nationalist agenda with a more political strategy, gradually moving away from the IRA's campaign of violence. He was wounded in a 1984 assassination attempt carried out by members of the Ulster Defence Association, a Northern Irish paramilitary group.

One of Adams's most significant roles was in the peace process that led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. He was instrumental in negotiating the IRA's ceasefire in 1994 and in persuading the republican movement to accept a political solution to the conflict. The Good Friday Agreement, which Adams endorsed, established a new power-sharing government in Northern Ireland and laid out a pathway for peace and reconciliation.

His involvement in the peace process was controversial, both within the republican movement and among Unionists and other parties in Northern Ireland. While some praised him for his role in ending the violence, others criticized him for his alleged past actions and his association with the IRA. He has been represented as a part of this process in films such as The Journey, in which he was played by Ian Beattie.

Adams served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK from 1983 to 2011 and as a Teachta Dála (TD) in the Irish parliament from 2011 to 2020. He stepped down as leader of Sinn Féin in 2018, a position he had held since 1983.
