Biography: Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is the Philippines 2nd female President (2001-2010) and the daughter of former President Diosdado Macapagal (1961-1965).

Educated in the US, she was the first elected female Vice President in 1998 but assumed the presidency after the controversial step down of President Joseph Estrada forced by the 2001 People Power Revolution.

Her administration was marked by greater economic prosperity for the country though marred by attempted military coups including the “Oakwood Mutiny” and allegations of corruption.

After her presidential term ended she was elected in 2010 as a member of the House of Representatives for the 2nd District of Pampanga.

Since 2011 Macapagal-Arroyo has been receiving treatment for cervical spondylosis amid further corruption charges.
