Biography: Ignacy Łukasiewicz is one of the most important figures in the history of Polish industry and technology. He was born in 1822 in the village of Zaduszniki, in the Polish region of Galicia.
After completing his schooling, he worked in a pharmacy in the city of Lviv. He then went on to study chemistry in Vienna and Krakow. In 1845, he returned to Lviv and opened his own pharmacy.
In 1856, Łukasiewicz began experimenting with distilling petroleum, and by 1858 he had successfully produced kerosene. He then built the first refinery in the world to produce kerosene on an industrial scale.
Łukasiewicz's kerosene was used to light the streets of Lviv, and later Warsaw and other Polish cities. It was also exported to other countries, including the United States.
Łukasiewicz's work helped to transform Poland from a largely agricultural country into an industrial powerhouse. He is considered one of the most important innovators in the history of the oil industry, and his legacy continues to this day.
