Boxer Ingemar Johansson

Profession: Boxer

Nationality:
Sweden
Swedish

Biography: Ingemar Johansson was a Swedish professional boxer known for his surprise victory against Floyd Patterson in 1959, with which he won the world heavyweight championship. This made him the first European to take the title from an American since 1933.

While Johansson twice held the European heavyweight title (1956–1958, 1962–1963) and also won a silver medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics, it was his victory against Patterson that made him an international star and a household name in Sweden.

Johansson's reign was to be short-lived, however, and he lost the title back to Patterson in a 1960 rematch then failed to regain it in their third fight in 1961. Johansson nevertheless remained a competitive fighter and upon his return to Europe he took back the European title from Dick Richardson.

After retiring from boxing, Johansson made various business ventures and maintained a fairly high profile in Swedish public life. He also maintained a long-term friendship with Patterson, with the two regularly visiting one another until both fell victim to Alzheimer's disease.
