Biography: Pope Innocent X succeeded Pope Urban VIII in 1644, at which he became head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States until his death in 1655.

Innocent X is known for his political prowess, during his reign the Holy See grew significantly in power. He was also involved in the English Civil War, conflicts within France, and hostilities with Italian states.

Theologically, he was known for his condemnation of the movement known as Jansenism.
