Biography: James Chichester-Clark, Baron Moyola, was a Northern Irish politician and the fifth Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1971. A member of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), his tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant and tumultuous events during the period known as "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland.

Born into a prominent family, Chichester-Clark was educated at Eton College and served in the British Army during World War II. After the war, he embarked on a political career and was elected to the Stormont Parliament in 1960.

Chichester-Clark assumed the office of Prime Minister of Northern Ireland in 1969, succeeding Terence O'Neill. His time in office was a period of intense civil unrest and political instability. The Troubles, a sectarian conflict that spanned several decades, were escalating during his tenure. As Prime Minister, he faced the challenge of addressing civil rights demands from the Catholic minority, while also appeasing the concerns of his predominantly Protestant, unionist supporters.

His administration was marked by efforts to introduce reforms aimed at addressing discrimination against the Catholic minority, but these were often met with resistance from hardline unionists. The situation in Northern Ireland deteriorated with increasing violence and the deployment of British troops in response to the growing unrest.

In 1971, facing mounting pressure and criticism from within his own party, Chichester-Clark resigned from his position as Prime Minister. His resignation marked a critical point in the history of Northern Ireland, as it preceded the introduction of "Internment" (detention without trial) and the suspension of the Stormont Parliament in 1972, which marked the end of home rule in Northern Ireland for over two decades.

After leaving politics, Chichester-Clark was made a life peer as Baron Moyola.
