Biography: John L. Sullivan, known as the "Boston Strong Boy," was an American boxer. He was the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules and the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1882 until 1892, when he was defeated by James J. Corbett.

Sullivan's parents wished for him to become a priest, but he ended up starting his career after which, as he describes it, he "drifted into boxing and pugilism." During his early career the sport was outlawed and he was often arrested, with the sport only coming to be reputability during and after his lifetime.

While there were no official titles in those days, Sullivan is believed to have taken the heavyweight champion in the United States after defeating Paddy Ryan in 1882. Some date his world heavyweight title from this date, with others claiming it only came after his 1888 win against Charley Mitchell in France. He was presented with a belt in 1887.

After losing his title to Corbett in 1892, Sullivan gradually retreated from professional boxing but remained a public figure. He toured the country giving boxing exhibitions, and after quitting drinking even gave prohibition lectures. His autobiography, Life and Reminiscences of a 19th-century Gladiator, was published in 1892.
