Biography: John Van Druten was a British playwright and director who made significant contributions to both the British and American theater scenes during the early and mid-20th century. His works often focused on contemporary themes and featured strong, complex female characters, making his plays unique for their time.

Van Druten first gained recognition in the late 1920s with his play Young Woodley, which explored the challenges faced by a young man coming of age. The play caused a stir in London due to its controversial subject matter, but it eventually became a success and established Van Druten as a talented playwright.

In the following years, Van Druten wrote several successful plays, including The Distaff Side (1934) and The Voice of the Turtle (1943). The latter was particularly well-received, enjoying a long run on Broadway and later being adapted into a successful film.

In the 1950s, Van Druten turned his attention to directing, making his Broadway directorial debut with the play I Am a Camera (1951). This play was adapted from Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and would later serve as the basis for the hit musical Cabaret.
