José Raúl Capablanca

Full Name: José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera

Biography: Capablanca was a Cuban chess prodigy and world chess champion (1921-1927). Just before turning 13, in 1901, he beat the reigning Cuban champion Juan Corzo. Then in 1909, he beat Frank Marshall—who was American chess champion from 1909 to 1936—which earned him an invite to the 1911 San Sebastián chess tournament, which he won.

After a series of successes, Capablanca finally arranged a game with world champion Emanuel Lasker in 1921; Capablanca won this match, making him world chess champion at the age of 32. From 1916 to 1924, Capablanca did not lose a single game.

In 1927, Capablanca played Alexander Alekhine; to whom he lost the world chess championship. While Capablanca sought to arrange a rematch, Alekhine appeared unwilling and their relationship deteriorated.
