Biography: Kal Penn is an American actor, author, and former White House staff member. He is best known for his roles as Lawrence Kutner on "House" (2007-2009), Kumar Patel in the "Harold & Kumar" film series, and Seth Wright on "Designated Survivor" (2016-2019).

Penn's interest in politics was influenced by stories of his grandparents marching with Gandhi. After studying film and sociology at UCLA, Penn's breakthrough role was in the film "Express: Aisle to Glory" (1998).

In 2007, Penn joined the cast of "House" but had to leave in 2009 when he accepted a position in the Obama White House as an Associate Director of Public Engagement. He took a break from the White House in 2010 to film "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas" (2011) before returning and later leaving again in 2011 for "How I Met Your Mother."

From 2016 to 2019, he starred as Seth Wright on "Designated Survivor" while also serving as a political consultant on the show. Penn has regularly been involved in Democratic politics, campaigning for Obama and serving on his arts policy committee.

In 2017, Penn resigned from the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities in protest of Trump's Charlottesville comments.
