Biography: Vernon Louis "Lefty" Gomez was an American baseball player. As a pitcher for the New York Yankees, Gomez was pivotal in their dominance during the 1930s, winning five World Series championships and earning accolades such as the pitching Triple Crown twice.

Gomez caught the eye of a scout while playing for the San Francisco Seals post-high school and soon signed with the Yankees, debuting in April 1930. Over the following decade, he became one of their standout players, performing as a seven-time All-Star between 1933 and 1939.

In 1933, Gomez married June O'Dea, a Broadway actress. The couple went through challenges before reconciling and raised four children together. By 1940, Gomez faced difficulty with an arm injury, which led to a temporary period with the Washington Senators before he ended his playing career in 1943.

After his retirement from baseball, Gomez maintained a public presence through speaking engagements. His contributions to the sport were recognized with induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Later, the Yankees honored him with a plaque in Monument Park in 1987.
