Yale's interest in locks began while working in his father's lock shop, where he developed a fascination with improving existing designs. His most important invention, the pin tumbler lock, patented in 1861, revolutionized the lock industry with its increased security and ease of use.

In 1868, Linus Yale Jr. joined forces with Henry R. Towne to establish the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company, which later became the Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company. The company grew into a global leader in the lock industry, and Yale's designs continue to influence modern lock technology.
