Biography: Mountbatten was a distinguished British statesman and a member of the Battenberg royal house. He was a second cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II and an uncle to her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was known to be a close mentor to Prince Charles.
During World War II he was the Supreme Commander of Allied forces in South East Asia, which included all operations in India, Burma, Ceylon, Malaya, northern islands of Sumatra and offensive operations Siam.
After the war he served as the last Viceroy and Governor-General of India, during which he was involved in the transfer of power from Britain to an independent India, as well as controversially overseeing the partition of India into India and Pakistan.
On August 27, 1979, Mountbatten was assassinated by an IRA bomb placed on his boat in Ireland.
