Macbeth is best known as the subject of William Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" and the many works it has inspired, although the play presents a highly inaccurate picture of his reign and personality.
1040-08-14 King Duncan I of Scotland killed in battle against his first cousin and rival Macbeth (not murdered in his sleep as in Shakespeare's play). The latter does succeed him as King.
