Biography: Mario Draghi served as President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019 and Prime Minister of Italy from 2021 to 2022. He is credited with helping to stabilize the euro currency during the Eurozone debt crisis.

Draghi was born in Rome in 1947. He earned an economics degree from Sapienza University of Rome where he studied under Federico Caffè. He later received a PhD in economics from MIT where his advisors were Franco Modigliani and Robert Solow.

Early in his career, Draghi was a professor at several Italian universities. He also worked at the World Bank in the 1980s and served as Director General of the Italian Treasury from 1991 to 2001. From 2002 to 2005, he was a vice chairman and managing director at Goldman Sachs International.

In 2006, Draghi became Governor of the Bank of Italy. During the European debt crisis, he famously stated that the European Central Bank was ready to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro. This speech is considered a key moment in saving the euro currency. Draghi served as President of the European Central Bank until 2019.

In February 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Draghi was appointed Prime Minister of Italy. He formed a government of national unity and implemented economic reforms and stimulus measures in response to the pandemic. Draghi resigned in July 2022 after losing support from coalition partners.
