Biography: The Belgian, poet, playwright and author was a member of the Symbolist literary movement. Writing in French he often examined the subconscious through fairy tale-like settings.

His first successful play was "La Princesse Maleine" (1889) and was followed by other successes such as "The Intruder" and "The Blind" (1890). His "Pelléas et Mélisande" (1892) was an important milestone in his career and went on to provide the basis for Claude Debussy's opera.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911.
