Profession: President of Egypt

Nationality:
Egypt
Egyptian

Biography: Mohamed Morsi was an Egyptian politician and engineer that served as the fifth President of Egypt (2012-2013). He was elected in the 2012 presidential election and then deposed in the 2013 coup d'état by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Morsi's rule was controversial, with efforts to grant himself unrestricted authority contra the constitution. This was justified as necessary to stop the judiciary which had been appointed by previous president, Hosni Mubarak, from interfering with the constitutional process. Many within Egypt regarded Morsi's actions as an "Islamist coup."

There were widespread protests in Egypt in 2013, with the protesters demanding Morsi resign. The military used this opportunity to intervene, claiming that they were doing so on behalf of the people, and seize power. All protests in support of Morsi were violently repressed, and as many as 800 people were killed.
