Profession: Dictator and President of Burma

Nationality:
Myanmar
Burmese

Biography: Ne Win was a Burmese political figure who held major influence in the country's politics for several decades, servining variously as Prime Minister (1958-1960) and President (1962-1981). Starting out as a military officer, he would play a crucial role in the early post-colonial history of Burma (then known as Myanmar).

In 1962, Ne Win led a military coup that toppled the democratically elected government of U Nu. After seizing power, he introduced the "Burmese Way to Socialism," a political and economic plan that sought to blend socialist principles with Buddhism. This led to the nationalization of industry and, combined with a policy of isolationism, contributed to Burma becoming one of the world's poorest countries.

Ne Win's rule, which lasted until 1988, was characterized by authoritarianism, economic mismanagement, and widespread civil unrest. He distanced himself from the United States and the Soviet Union, but on the whole had good relations with Mao Zedong. There was some tension between 1967 and 1971 due to Mao's support for rebel groups and anti-Chinese riots.

The late stages of his regime witnessed increasing public discontent, culminating in the 1988 uprising. While Ne Win stepped down in response to these protests, the military remained firmly in control and perpetuated a similar style of leadership. Despite his official departure, moreover, it is believed that Ne Win continued to exert influence behind the scenes until his death in 2002.
