Biography: Otto von Bismarck played a pivotal role in the unification of Germany in the 19th century. He served as the first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871 to 1890.

Bismarck was born into a noble family in 1815. He studied law and later managed his family's estates before entering politics in 1847 as a representative in the Prussian legislature.

As Minister President of Prussia from 1862, Bismarck provoked and won wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. These victories led to the unification of Germany in 1871, with Prussia as the dominant state.

As Chancellor, Bismarck implemented welfare programs to undermine socialist opponents. He also engaged in a struggle called the Kulturkampf against the influence of the Catholic Church.

In foreign policy, Bismarck maintained peace in Europe through a system of alliances and diplomacy. In 1890, however, he was forced to resign by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Bismarck subsequently retired to his estate and wrote his memoirs, dying in 1898.
