Biography: Rao served as 9th Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996, in which he was notable for being the second non-Hindi to hold this office and the first from South India.

During Rao's tenure as Prime Minister, he oversaw major economic developments within India as well as several national security incidents: reopening India's nuclear programme, navigating the 1991 economic crisis, and defeating an insurgency in Punjab.

Rao is sometimes known as the 'Father of Indian Economic Reforms' and his economic policies were continued by later Prime Ministers of India such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh.
