Biography: Sergey Lavrov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1972, and then joined the Soviet Foreign Ministry. He served in a number of diplomatic posts before being appointed as Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations in 1994.

Since 2004 he has been the Foreign Minister of Russia. As Foreign Minister under President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov has been a staunch defender of Russian interests. He has been critical of Western interference in the affairs of sovereign states.

Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lavrov has been under personal sanctions by the United States and its allies.
