Profession: Colonel and Prime Minister of Fiji

Biography: Sitiveni Rabuka is a Fijian politician, best known as the Prime Minister of Fiji since 2022. He has served as Prime Minister of Fiji once prior, from 1992 to 1999, as well as serving variously as Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (1999-2001) and Chairman of the Cakaudrove Provincial Council (2001-2008).

In 1987, Rabuka instigated two military coups against the Fijian government. The first of these led to the overthrow of Prime Minister Timoci Bavadra, and the second brought about the deposition of Elizabeth II as Queen of Fiji. Rabuka led them in his capacity as Lieutenant Colonel, where he was at the time the third in command of the Royal Fiji Military Forces.

Rabuka was alleged to have been involved in various further coup d'états in Fiji, in 2000 and 2006, as well as a mutiny at Suva's Queen Elizabeth Barracks in 2000. He was arrested in 2006 with respect to his alleged involvement in the 2000 coup, but he was found not guilty later that same year.

When Ro Teimumu Kepa stood down as leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party in 2016, Rabuka took over the position. He eventually resigned from this position, in which he was then serving as Leader of the Opposition, in 2020. In 2021, Rabuka formed a new political party called the People's Alliance.

The 2022 elections were a success for the People's Alliance, with the party becoming the second largest in the Fijian parliament and putting an end to Frank Bainimarama's 16 years in power. Rabuka organised a three-party coalition after the election, with which he became the Prime Minister of Fiji for the second time.
