Biography: Confederate general during the American Civil War, and one of the best-known Confederate commanders after General Robert E. Lee.

The nickname of "Stonewall" has been attributed to fellow Confederate General Barnard Bee at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Bee, however, was mortally wounded and whether the reference was a compliment or an insult was never explained.

Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history.
