Biography: Elkins was an African-American dentist and abolitionist, known also for a number of patented inventions and improvements. He began his career as a pharmacist, then after ten years trained as a dentist.

During the operation of the Underground Railroad, Elkins was involved in helping to transport slaves to Canada. He helped directly and indirectly by raising funds for the organisation, including by running a renowned station in New York.
